Makeup for Men: Is it Okay for Men to Wear Some?

By

When you say makeup, automatically it is associated with women. It seems that men does not have the license to wear makeup, unless one is a metro sexual or admittedly gay. But the truth is, makeup isn't really just designed for women. It's just the fact that it is mostly women who buy makeup which in turn pushed the companies to market the product for women. For instance, making it look more feminine and having a sweet feminine fragrance. But straight men wear make up all the time! Yes, even hearth throb, straight, masculine men. Like who? Hollywood Celebrities!

Russel Brand, who played Aldous Snow in Get Him to the Greek has popularized the "guyliner" (which is really just an eyeliner). Even the king himself, Elvis Presley, used concealer and foundation. Robbie Williams also admittedly used an eyeliner! Brandon Flowers of the Killers uses makeup too before concerts! And for my final example, Johnny Depp or Captain Jack Sparrow to some, who is the hottest man for a lot of women, wears makeup!

These Hollywood celebrities and rock stars are popularizing makeup use for men. However, men are still hesitant to go to a cosmetic store and buy some makeup, due to the strong association of makeup to being feminine. This is why some companies have marketed makeup specifically for men, changing their look, scent and even the name to make it more masculine. Eyeliners for guys are now called "guyliner"; mascara for guys are now called "manscara". As celebrities wear it all the time, no one complains or proclaim they are gay. It looks like Metro Sexual Man is here to stay, says James Endersby of Opinium Research (See article from Fox News)

Cosmetics specifically made for men are generally the same makeup that women wear. They are just marketed differently by changing the packaging and the scent to appeal more to men. Guyliners are really just black eyeliners (See How to Apply Eyeliner if you're interested). Men can get the same effect by purchasing makeup that women wear. It's just that, your high school classmate might see you purchasing one in a beauty shop, ruining your bad boy image.

What men can do is order make up online because online cosmetics stores deliver it straight to your house. Hopefully it's not delivered while you're watching a brutal mixed martial arts fight on TV with all your guy friends.

It will take time until being metro sexual becomes acceptable in this society. I guess that will happen after school jocks are accepted in Glee clubs without loosing their coolness (see the TV series called Glee). But for the meantime, men can wear makeup subtly, as not to look like a drag queen and instead look like a celebrity as hot as Johnny Depp. If makeup helps you with your personality development, then, why not, right?
